If so: Of course it doen't produce ash since it is not burnt at all! It's a diffusor medium and heat storage/capacitance while burning fossile matter (e.g. propane gas or ethanole). The burning process of those matter can be quite efficient and smoke free (think of Sterno for chafing-dish) but it's not more environmentally friendly since those are mostly made of raw-oil derivates.
I think the capacitance effect of the glass pebbles is a benefit, though, since the temperature is lowered and thereby the loss of energy reduced while the surface of vaporisation is increased so the burning process is more efficient.
